To my almost lover

Young lovers are most careless with their love,
not knowing yet that love has teeth and claws–
that love, feeling its loved one softly move,
might embrace more firmly with its jaws.

We know better than to love like that;
love’s other nature is to nudge and purr.
It wraped itself around us as we sat
and talked, and dreamed, and time became a blur.

But we would not be fooled so easily–
romance is just domesticated lust.
From former loves we know that it’s a lie;
love’s promises do not deserve our trust.

You and I are much too wise to fall,
so we've decided not to love at all.
